Qatar-based television network Al Jazeera and Spanish broadcaster Mediapro have partnered to launch beIN Sports channel. BeIN Sports, which has also been reported to be planning a premium DTT launch, will be airing across Spanish pay-TV platforms from 1 August. The channel will be distributed via all the main pay-TV operators and will feature major international football competitions such as the Uefa Champions League and the Europa League, among others.
BeIN Sports presently operates four channels in France as well as several more in the US, Canada and Asia. Al Jazeera is also rumoured to be interested in acquiring a stake in Spanish pay-TV platform Digital+ from Telefonica to ease regulatory concerns about the operators proposed takeover. Sources say that Al Jazeera could use the Spanish market as a platform to strengthen its position in Latin American.
