The festival, which is being held online this year, will have a 20-film competition lineup and special programmes, designed for an online audience.
The 60th edition of the annual Annecy International Animation Film Festival begins tomorrow, June 15 and will continue until June 30. The festival, which is usually held in the southeast of France, will be streamed online this year in light of the Covid-19 outbreak, with a 20-film competition lineup and special programmes, redesigned to adapt to the online format.
Features of the online edition include WTF2020, which will showcase 14 films from all walks of life, where “films are stripped bare, uninhibited and free”, according to Sébastien Sperer the programme organiser.
There will also be a showcase of the Best of Annecy 2019 and the Best of Annecy Kids 2019. Both are aimed at offering a “concentrated version of the best of animation screened during the last Annecy Festival edition”, according to a press statement issued by the organiser.
Also featured will be Zero Impunity, a feature film in the 2019 Contrechamp competition category, which is part of a transmedia project combining investigative and activist journalism. The film aims to put an end to the seemingly total impunity for sexual violence in current armed conflicts by presenting victims from around the world who had the courage to break the silence and be sources of inspiration.
Mosley, a feature film, which follows the story of curious creatures known by the name “Thoriphants”, who revolt against their life of slavery and set out on a perilous journey in search of the mysterious city Uprights, will be part of the 2020 showcase.
Most of the competition content will be available online including Short Films (Official, Off-Limits, Perspectives, Young Audiences, Graduation Films), Feature Films (Official and Contrechamp), TV and Commission Films and finally the VR Works. A note on the website, however, states that “some feature films may not be available in full without restrictions, so ten-minute minimum length extracts or short presentation documentaries will be provided instead”.
In addition to the official 2020 programming, the Annecy Festival partners are offering a selection of preview programmes or several bonuses from their productions.
