beIN Sports has won the exclusive rights to broadcast matches from Portugal’s top football division, Primeira Liga. With this agreement, beIN Sports becomes the network with Spain’s widest international football offer by far, as it also includes the English Premier League, Serie A, France’s Ligue 1, Brazil’s Copa Libertadores and UEFA’s Champions League and Europa League. The channel was launched in Spain in mid August.
The channel is broadcast by all of Spain’s major pay-TV operators, Including Vodafone TV, Orange TV, and Telefónica’s Movistar+.
The Al Jazeera-owned network will air weekly games although the precise number of matches hasn’t been specified yet. It will also produce a round-up programme every Monday with highlights of the week’s action.
Previously never as followed as England’s Premier League or Italy’s Serie A by Spanish football fans, the Primeira Liga has drawn the attention of the public since Iker Casillar, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, announced his transfer to Porto FC. Other Spanish players such as Alberto Bueno, Cristian Tello and Diego Capel are also playing in Portugal’s league.
