Cinema Akil will screen eight of Wong Kar-wai's top films from May 12 to 28, 2023.
Cinema Akil, in collaboration with The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai, is organising “The Rhythm of Dreams,” a retrospective of the films of Chinese director Wong Kar-wai.
The event, which will run from May 12 to 28, will showcase eight of his top films.
His films delve into themes of love, longing, and loneliness, set against the backdrop of urban life in Hong Kong.
Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, Fallen Angels, The Grandmaster, As Tears Goes By, Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time Redux and 2046, will be screened during the retrospective.
As Tears Goes By is Wong’s directorial debut and was inspired by Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets. It will screen on May 16 at 7 PM and May 24 at 9.45 PM.
Set in 1960s Hong Kong, Days of Being Wild follows the lives of several characters who intersect while on a quest for an intimate connection. It will screen on May 17 at 9.15 PM and May 28 at 7 PM.
The Grandmaster is set in 1930s China and is based on the life story of Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man. It is set to screen on May 18 at 7 PM and May 26 at 9.15 PM.
2046 takes place on a train in a futuristic landscape that takes passengers to a place where they can recapture their memories but never return from. It will screen on May 13 at 9.15 PM, May 21 at 7 PM, and May 24 at 7 PM.
Fallen Angels, the crime drama takes place in 1995 when Hong Kong is still under British rule. It will screen on May 14 at 7 PM, May 19 at 7 PM, and May 26 at 7 PM.
Ashes of Time Redux is based on Jin Yong’s book, The Legend of the Condor Heroes. The movie will screen on May 20 at 9.15 PM, May 24 at 7 PM, and May 25 at 7 PM.
In the Mood for Love was named the second greatest film of the 21st century in a BBC survey in 2016. It will screen on May 13 at 7 PM, May 17 at 7 PM, and May 27 at 7 PM.
The romantic crime comedy-drama Chungking Express is set in Hong Kong and tells two stories in sequence. It will screen on May 20 at 7 PM and May 23 at 7 PM.
