The sixth edition of Documentary Voices hosted workshops and sessions by renowned industry professionals under the theme Children and Cinema. American documentary filmmaker and Harvard Professor Ross McEwlee, acclaimed New York University professor Yemane Demissie and Emmy-nominated Casting Director Nancy Bishop shared their experiences and expertise with 200 participants, including filmmaking students and independent filmmakers.
Guest of Honour, Professor Ross McElwee, headlined this years event focused on the theme of making documentaries on children. McElwee, who has made ten feature-length documentaries as well as several shorter films, delivered a thought provoking lecture which was followed by a film screening and an informative and engaging Q&A at Horizon Interna

tional College, Dubai, the education partner of Documentary Voices.
A six-day course wherein participants were taught how to produce their own documentaries, including editing and post-production, was conducted by Professor Yemane Demissie at AM Studio in Al Quoz. The workshop concluded with a ceremony where the 23 children-themed documentaries made during the workshops were screened. An award was also presented to the team of the best film made during the master class.
Documentary Voices supports, encourages and inspires filmmakers of all ages. This is rare in any part of the word. I am thankful to be part of such an endeavour and thrilled to be surrounded by such passion, commitment and promise, said Professor Demissie, who teaches film, television and documentary production, writing and cinema studies classes at NYUs Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film & Television. An independent writer, producer and director, he has received numerous national and international grants and fellowships for his work.
Another highlight of this years Documentary Voices was the panel run by Nancy Bishop and Anila Gajevic on the International Film Market. The well-attended session highlighted tips and techniques for casting young adults and children; a topic that is highly relevant and crucial in the initial stages of film production.
The 2013 edition was one the best events organised by Documentary Voices. The lectures and workshops led by renowned filmmakers was an absolute success and watching the 23 documentaries made by our participants on the closing night was enormously rewarding, said Mahshid Zamani, Founder and Managing Director of Documentary Voices.
