This licensing deal underscores the growing international appeal of Turkish drama and opens new opportunities for distribution in European markets.
Eccho Rights has finalised an agreement with Joyn, the streaming platform owned by ProSiebenSat.1 Media, to bring the Turkish drama series Wounded Birds to audiences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This marks the first time a Turkish daily drama has been licensed in Germany.
The series will stream in its original Turkish language with German subtitles rather than being dubbed—a decision influenced by the large Turkish-speaking population of over 3m in Germany.
Herbert L. Kloiber, CEO of Eccho Rights, said: “The potential for Turkish drama in Germany has always been there, but typically the huge diaspora has found other means to consume Turkish content. We are delighted that Joyn has opened the door to local licensing of Turkish series which have found huge success wherever they have aired elsewhere in Western Europe.”
Produced by Stellar Yapim, Wounded Birds (201 x 45’) made history as the first Turkish drama series to secure international pre-sales before its domestic premiere. It was sold to Telemundo (Puerto Rico) and OBN (Bosnia & Herzegovina) before debuting on Turkey’s Kanal D. The series has since been sold in a wide variety of territories including the US and Spain where Wounded Birds scored top ratings for Mediaset’s divinity.
From the creators of the globally popular series Elif, Wounded Birds follows the journey of Meryem, a resilient and compassionate young woman who has spent five years raising her “little brother” Ömer. Unbeknownst to her, Ömer is actually the kidnapped son of a powerful industrialist, taken as part of a power struggle within his wealthy family. Meryem’s father, Durmus, initially intended to sell the infant but was imprisoned before he could complete the act. Determined to give Ömer a better life, Meryem works tirelessly to protect him from a harsh fate, unaware of the secrets that tie him to a powerful legacy.
