The film has picked up several awards recently including Best Foreign Film from the Diorama International Film Festival in India and three awards at Cairo International Film Festival.
Egypt will submit writer and director Ahmed Fawzi Salah’s debut feature Poisonous Roses (Ward Masmoum), which premiered at last year’s Rotterdam International Film Festival, and won several awards at international film festivals, as its entry to the best international feature film category at the 2020 Oscars. Voting for the 92nd Academy Awards will take place from January 2-7, with the ceremony set to take place on February 9.
Based on Ahmed Zaghloul Al-sheety’s 1990 novel Poisonous Roses for Saqr, the film revolves around siblings Tahya and Sakr, who live with their mother in Cairo.
Egypt’s previous entries to the Oscar have, thus far, not been successful.
