'The Burdened' stars Khaled Hamdan, Abeer Mohammed, Samah Alamrani and Awsam Abdulrahman.
MAD Solutions has acquired the Arab distribution rights to the Yemeni feature film The Burdened (Al Murhaqoon), directed by Amr Gamal, which is among works-in-progress presented at the Red Sea Souk project market, according to a report by Variety.
The story, written by Gamal and Mazen Refaat, centres on Ahmed, Isra’a and their three children in Aden, Yemen in 2019. Both parents lose their jobs and suffer from the economic crisis. The movie starts with Isra’a finding out about her pregnancy at a time when they cannot cover the expenses of a new child, leading them to make difficult decisions in order to survive.
The Yemen-Sudan coproduction is produced by Mohsen Alkhalifi, Gamal, Amjad Abu Alala and Mohammed Alomda.
The project, now in post, brings together Yemen, Sudan and Saudi Arabia in a landmark co-production.
The Burdened scooped an award among works-in-progress at the industry section of the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival in July.
