Ben Hania started working on 'Four Daughters' in 2016, when she first heard the story on the news in Tunisia.
Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania has made history by securing her second Oscar nomination, a groundbreaking achievement for an Arab woman in the film industry. The nomination comes in the category of Best Documentary Feature Film for Four Daughters or Les Filles d’Olfa, featuring Tunisian actor Hend Sabri.
This remarkable feat follows Ben Hania’s previous Oscar nod in 2021 for The Man Who Sold His Skin, which earned her recognition in the Best International Feature Film category. Additionally, her feature Beauty and the Dogs was chosen as the Tunisian entry for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017.
Four Daughters, an international collaboration involving Saudi Arabia, France, Tunisia, and Germany, emerges as a poignant drama narrating the tale of a Tunisian mother on a quest for answers after her two elder daughters are radicalised and disappear to join ISIS.
Ben Hania embarked on the journey of crafting Four Daughters in 2016, inspired by a news story unfolding in Tunisia.
The film, an ambitious exploration of rebellion, memory, and sisterhood, reconstructs the intricate story of Olfa Hamrouni and her daughters in Tunisia. Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the film weaves together intimate interviews, reenactments, and confessions to delve into the complexities of a family history marked by radicalisation and disappearance.
Produced by Tanit Films in collaboration with Cinetelefilms and Twenty Twenty, and co-produced with Red Sea Film Festival Foundation, ZDF/Arte, and Jour2Fête, Four Daughters is the result of the creative vision of Nadim Cheikhrouha in association with Habib Attia and Thanassis Karathanos.
