Private television station Al-Youm, which backs the opposition, has been closed by the Kuwaiti government for allegedly failing to meet administrative conditions.
As quoted by the official KUNA news agency, the ministry stated that the license of the satellite station was cancelled for violating its terms and for failing to meet a deadline to rectify its situation in line with the law.
Al-Youm chairman Ahmad Al-Jabr confirmed that the satellite channel had received orders to shut. The station which was established over a year ago then went off the air immediately.
Mohammad al-Daas, general manager of the channel said: “Al-Youm channel has received a letter from the information minister scrapping the station’s licence with immediate effect. The station will seek recourse in court against this unfair decision.”
The station has broadcast programmes which interviewed many leading opposition figures in the run-up to the December 1 parliamentary election, and after the results were announced.
