Lebanese director Nadine Labakis Capernaum won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film revolves around a 12-year-old boy who takes his parents to court for bringing him into a miserable existence. Labakis drama was in competition with 20 other works for the international festivals Palme dOr.
International sales agent, Wild Bunch has unveiled a raft of deals for Capernaum.
Key deals, as per media reports, include to France (Gaumont), Italy (Lucky Red), Japan (Kino Films), Scandinavia (Scanbox Entertainment), Benelux (Cinéart), China (Road Pictures) and the UK (Picturehouse).
As reported by the press, Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has acquired North American and Latin American rights and is also planning an awards-qualifying release in December.
The film reportedly earned a 15-minute standing ovation after Thursdays premiere. Labakis win makes her the second female director to receive the Palme dOr after Jane Campion for The Piano.
