SpaceX has secured the necessary operating licences in nine of the 14 countries where Airtel Africa maintains a presence, with regulatory processes underway for the remaining five.
Airtel Africa has announced a strategic agreement with SpaceX to introduce Starlinks high-speed satellite internet services to its customers across Africa. This collaboration aims to significantly improve digital connectivity for individuals, businesses and underserved communities, particularly in remote and rural areas.
Currently, SpaceX has secured operational licenses in nine of the 14 African countries where Airtel Africa operates, with the remaining five licenses in progress. The partnership will allow Airtel Africa to bolster its next-generation satellite internet offerings and explore expanded rural network coverage through cellular backhauling solutions.
In addition to enhancing connectivity for institutions such as schools and health centres, the partnership is set to promote broader digital inclusion across the continent. Both companies also plan to explore future opportunities where SpaceX can leverage Airtel Africas existing infrastructure and capabilities to further expand internet access.
Airtel Africa MD and Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar said: “We remain deeply committed to our vision to enrich the lives of people of Africa. This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step to demonstrate our continued commitment to advancing Africas digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships. Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure that every individual, business, and community have reliable and affordable voice and data connectivity even in the most remote and currently under-served parts of Africa.”
SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Business Operations Chad Gibbs added: “We are very excited to work with Airtel to bring the transformative benefits of Starlink to the African people in new and innovative ways. Starlink is available in more than 20 African markets, and this agreement with Airtel highlights how, once licensed, Starlink welcomes the opportunity to join forces with important industry leaders to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from Starlinks presence. The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in Africas telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering across Africa makes great sense for our business.”
