Airbus Defence and Space in France will construct ANGEO-1, the first Angolan Earth observation satellite.
The Angolan Ministry of Finance has signed a financing agreement with France to construct ANGEO-1, the nations first high-resolution Earth observation satellite system. Finalised during the Angolan Presidents diplomatic visit to France, the agreement marks a major milestone in Angolas technological growth and space exploration ambitions, building on six years of bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
The project is funded through two loans secured with Société Générale bank, totaling $231.46 million (35.27 million and 189.99 million). These funds will cover the satellites construction, launch, and orbital operations.
Developed in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space, ANGEO-1 represents a transformative step in Angolas space capabilities. Once operational, the satellite will use Earth observation technology to address key challenges such as boosting agricultural productivity, monitoring environmental changes, and improving disaster management.
A vital aspect of the initiative is knowledge transfer and capacity building. Training programs and academic partnerships aim to equip Angolan specialists with the expertise needed to lead the countrys growing space industry, ensuring sustainable progress in this sector.
The agreement highlights over a decade of successful collaboration between Airbus and Angola, underscoring the value of international partnerships in advancing Africas space ambitions.
