The National Space Science and Technology Centre (NSSTC) at UAE University recently conducted a series of sessions to finalise the design of the Arab Satellite 813. This advanced earth observation satellite will monitor Earths environment and climate, providing hyperspectral observations in the Visible/Near Infrared (VNIR) and Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, with a focus on the UAE and other member countries of the Arab Space Cooperation Group (ASCG), according to a report by WAM.
Funded by the UAE Space Agency (UAESA) and executed by UAE University, Arab Satellite 813 is a cornerstone project for enhancing collaboration among ASCG countries in space science and technology.
During the review sessions, the satellite’s design, its various sensors, and the ground support systems were thoroughly evaluated. Following the successful completion of the design phase, the engineering teams are set to advance to the Assembly Integration and Test (AI&T) phase at the NSSTC, according to Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency.
The mission will develop a spacecraft equipped with a hyperspectral optical instrument and is expected to foster collaboration among ASCG member countries. The satellite, named 813, commemorates the inception of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad under Al-Mamuns reign, an institution known for its contributions to science and scholarship.
Arab Satellite 813 is distinguished by its weight, size and efficiency compared to other hyperspectral satellites. The selection process emphasised local manufacturing capabilities, aiming to enhance domestic and regional expertise in satellite design, production, assembly, testing and data analysis.
