Under the MoU, Space42 and Telkomsat will assess a range of potential collaboration areas related to non-terrestrial networks and D2D connectivity.

Space42 has signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia to explore collaboration in direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, marking a step toward expanding satellite-enabled 5G services beyond traditional network infrastructure. The partnership is built around Equatys, a D2D initiative formed by Space42 in partnership with Viasat, aimed at delivering seamless connectivity across satellite and terrestrial networks.
The collaboration supports both companies ambitions to close connectivity gaps and enable a converged communications experience that integrates space- and ground-based networks. Equatys, announced in September 2025, is designed around a 3GPP Release 17 and beyond non-terrestrial network framework. It will support more than 100 MHz of harmonised global mobile satellite services spectrum, allowing standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect directly to satellites and extending seamless 5G access across more than 180 markets worldwide.
Under the MoU, Space42 and Telkomsat will assess a range of potential collaboration areas related to non-terrestrial networks and D2D connectivity. These include evaluating technical, commercial and regulatory feasibility for satellite-enabled services, aligning network infrastructure to support smooth handover between terrestrial and satellite systems without additional hardware, and setting performance benchmarks for latency, bandwidth and reliability. The agreement also covers cooperation on regulatory and security requirements, joint research and development initiatives, pilot programmes and field trials, as well as longer-term strategic planning around product road maps and infrastructure investment as Equatys scales globally.
Through the partnership, Telkomsat aims to enhance user experiences and strengthen its value proposition as a technology provider, particularly across its extensive domestic and regional footprint.
Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42, said: “Equatys represents the future of global connectivity, tackling existing gaps that leave billions unserved by terrestrial networks. By partnering with Telkomsat, we continue to expand our ecosystem and advance our shared vision of universal connectivity. The move builds on Space42s standing as a global leader in non-terrestrial networks and highlights the power of collaboration in ensuring users and devices can access next-generation, sustainable connectivity.”
Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf, CEO of Telkomsat, added: “Satellite-based connectivity will remain a key element in the national network architecture, particularly to ensure reliable communications in remote areas as well as for the countrys strategic needs. Telkomsat remains committed to delivering inclusive and sustainable services for all communities.”
Equatys operates as a shared space tower company using a multi-tenant TowerCo model, designed to reduce duplicated capital expenditure while providing cost-efficient capacity to multiple operators. Its scalable, infrastructure-grade architecture is intended to serve three core segmentsD2D, IoT and mobile satellite servicessupporting a broad range of applications.
By exploring ways to integrate this scalable platform with Telkomsats accessible markets, the partners aim to move D2D connectivity from concept to commercialization. Together, Space42 and Telkomsat said they are working toward a new generation of hybrid connectivity that can support digital economies, enterprise innovation and inclusive growth across diverse geographies.
