As part of the initiative, Riyadh hosted Korean Film Week at Cinehouse from January 19 to 23.
Saudi Film Commission has unveiled a new initiative to support art cinema, underscoring its role in enriching culture and honing the skills of creators. The programme includes a variety of local and international workshops and cinematic events aimed at encouraging creative storytelling and conveying deep cultural narratives beyond the realm of traditional commercial films, according to a report by Asharq Al-Awsat.
In Saudi Arabia, 27 trainees participated in 10 workshops organised in collaboration with 11 entities in Jeddah. On the international stage, the commission hosted workshops in Berlin, where 11 trainees gained exposure to the latest trends in cinema through interactions with leading organisations. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the sustainability of art cinema by supporting local talent and fostering collaboration among filmmakers.
As a highlight of the initiative, Korean Film Week debuted in Riyadh from January 19 to 23 at Cinehouse. Sponsored by the Film Commission, the event offers a platform to explore Korean culture through cinema, enhancing cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and South Korea.
Attendees can enjoy screenings of celebrated Korean films like Cobweb and Parasite, along with interactive dialogue sessions addressing topics such as “The Global Appeal of Korean Cinema” and the influence of Korean culture on the industry. The event also features seminars with film directors and international experts, promoting cultural communication and creative exchange.
These initiatives underline the Film Commission’s dedication to expanding Saudi Arabia’s cinematic landscape, creating opportunities for filmmakers to showcase their work, and positioning the country as a global hub for cinematic innovation and cultural collaboration.
