Sony’s Wi-Fi enabled wearable action cam

Sony Middle East and Africa has announced the availability of the Action Cam, which delivers the brand’s industry-leading image quality in a new, wearable point-of-view video format. Fitted out for the quintessential outdoor and extreme sport enthusiast, Sony’s new Action Cam is particularly tailored to capture high-quality Full HD 1080p footage in a variety of situations, while in motion.

Whether it is sky-diving, sand boarding, dune-bashing, skating or quad-biking, footage from the Action Cam benefits from Sony’s strong imaging heritage, with exceptional lowlight, slow-motion and anti-shake capabilities. The point-of-view shooting solution is perfect for adventures on the mountain, in the water, and any other action spot.

Designed to shoot dynamic videos, the 90g Action Cam is as ideal for capturing the more sedate images.

Action Cam comes bundled with a rugged, waterproof housing and a universal tripod mount that is built to handle extreme environments.  Within the housing, the camera is waterproof down to 60 metres and has dirt and dust resistant seals that help make it impervious to mud, sand, rain and grime.

The Action Cam’s built-in Wi-Fi allows users to instantly share their content to a smartphone. Additionally, Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones and tablets can pull optimised movies and photos from the Action Cam without requiring a special cable. Once copied, the recorded content can be uploaded or shared via email or social media through connecting with an available 3G or 4G cellular network.

The Action Cam also features Sony’s hallmark SteadyShot image stabilisation technology, found in its portfolio of digital imaging products, which compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video no matter how tough the conditions. In addition, innovative 3-Way Shake-Cancelling adds electronic roll stability for even smoother video capture. An ultra-wide angle Carl Zeiss Tessar lens captures all the action in a 170-degree wide field of view with pin-sharp clarity whether on the desert slopes or skydiving. No other mountable camera combines such advanced image stabilisation and optics with a rugged exterior and convenient Wi-Fi connectivity.

Sony’s latest Ultra-Compact Full HD Video Camera comes with five video modes, with a class-exclusive 4x slow mode in 720p HD. Extreme sports athletes and enthusiasts can also enjoy HD slow modes including 2x (1280 x 720, 60p) and 4x (1280 x 720, 120p) that is ideal for studying and refining form and technique. For traditional shooting methods, the Action Cam offers several different resolutions to suit varied needs such as Full HD (1920×1080 30p), STD HD (1280×720, 30p) and SD VGA (640×480, 30p).

The Action Cam’s compact, lightweight body also houses Sony’s renowned Exmor R CMOS image sensor for stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain. Operation is as simple as pressing a large start/stop button. The camera also features expandable memory with a Memory Stick Micro and Micro SD/SDHC card slot, a built-in stereo microphone to capture all the exciting sounds of adventures, and a micro HDMI output to share videos with friends and family on the HDTV. The Action Cam is Mac and PC compatible for easy upload to social sharing sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

For hands-free shooting, mount the action camera easily and securely to flat and curved surfaces with the included adhesive mounts. Sony also offers a suite of additional mounting attachments to ensure the camera is always straddled in the best position.

Additionally, Sony has announced a firmware update for Action Cam HDR-AS15, which is available online. The update includes PS Recording Mode (1920×1080/60p) to help users capture smooth images of fast moving scenes with a higher frame rate of 60p.

A new “Water Mode” is available on the Action Cam, which adjusts the camera’s white balance to an optimal setting for underwater shooting. Furthermore, the new “Beep Off” setting gives users the option to turn off audio notifications of key camera functions, particularly when recording is enabled or disabled.
