The new feature is built into Viu’s mobile app, expanding the platform’s offering alongside its existing catalogue of premium long-form series and films.
Viu, the video streaming service owned by PCCW, has expanded its entertainment offering with the launch of Viu Shorts, a new vertical video section now available on the Viu mobile app. The addition introduces micro-dramas alongside Viu’s established catalogue of premium long-form series and films, giving viewers greater flexibility in how they consume content.
Designed for quick, on-the-go viewing, Viu Shorts delivers fast-paced episodic storytelling in a vertical format, with episodes typically running between one and three minutes.
Janice Lee, CEO of Viu and Managing Director of PCCW Media Group, said: “We are thrilled to add a new facet to our service with the launch of Viu Shorts. This new feature brings viewers fast-paced storytelling in a 1–3 minute episodic format, perfectly complementing Viu’s extensive offering of premium long-form series and movies. With these bite-sized dramas now part of our offering, we aim to engage our audience according to their content preferences and provide enjoyable viewing for every moment.”
The Viu Shorts library includes a growing range of multilingual and multi-genre micro-dramas in Chinese, Korean, Thai and Indonesian, spanning genres such as romance, thriller, fantasy and variety. All content is supported with local-language subtitles to broaden accessibility across Viu’s markets.
The feature has been built specifically for mobile use and is fully integrated into the Viu app. A newly introduced bottom navigation bar enables users to move seamlessly between short-form videos and Viu’s full-length series and movie offerings. Viu Shorts follows a freemium access model, with subscribers receiving unlimited access to the complete micro-drama catalogue, while non-subscribers can watch selected titles, with advertising varying by subscription tier.
To support a steady pipeline of content, Viu has partnered with established micro-drama distributors such as Rising Joy and KT Studiogenie, along with producers including China Huace, 1001 Frames and Youhug Media. The move strengthens Viu’s mobile-first strategy and reflects growing demand for short-form entertainment without compromising production quality.
The updated Viu app, featuring the new Viu Shorts section, is now available for free download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Viu operates across Asia, the Middle East and South Africa.
