YouTube is reportedly in talks to launch its own online TV subscription service. YouTubes interest in a live TV package has been reported in the past, but this the first time the name and details of the plan have emerged, according to Bloomberg.
The service, Unplugged, would allow customers to stream cable TV channel bundles online.
Bloomberg has reported that the new service, which would launch in 2017, is one of YouTubes biggest priorities. YouTube has already overhauled its technical architecture for the project, the report said. YouTube executives have discussed these plans with most major media companies, including Comcast Corp.s NBCUniversal, Viacom Inc., Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. and CBS Corp., but have yet to secure any rights.
Unplugged follows YouTubes YouTubes ad-supported Red subscription service. Launched in October last year, Red offers exclusive access to videos from popular YouTubers, but, as yet, offers no TV content. When launched, Unplugged will run alongside Red.
