The GFX Eterna 55 is production-ready, featuring a rugged cinema-style design with industry-standard connections, a flexible native lens mount and a visually stepless internal electronic ND filter.
Fujifilm’s GFX Eterna 55, the company’s first digital camera designed specifically for professional filmmaking, has been added to IMAX’s list of certified digital cameras. IMAX certification is reserved for select high-end cameras that meet the company’s image quality requirements and support IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratios, ensuring compatibility with its large-format cinematic standards.
The certification places the GFX Eterna 55 within the Filmed For IMAX programme, IMAX’s end-to-end partnership initiative that enables filmmakers to fully leverage the company’s technology to create more immersive theatrical experiences. Cameras approved under the programme are chosen for their superior image capture capabilities and their ability to deliver visuals optimised for IMAX screens worldwide.
At the core of the GFX Eterna 55 is what Fujifilm describes as the tallest digital filmmaking sensor currently available on the open market. The camera allows filmmakers to record using the full sensor height of 32.71mm in Open Gate mode, prioritising image area and vertical scale—key attributes for IMAX presentation. Its native 4:3 large-format sensor provides a broad creative canvas, offering flexibility in framing while supporting both spherical and anamorphic production workflows.
Jonathan Fischer, Chief Content Officer at IMAX, said: “Adding the Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 to our roster of IMAX-certified cameras is a win for filmmakers and fans alike, giving the world’s best storytellers another world-class tool to design truly immersive, cinematic visuals specifically for IMAX. As we continue to expand the ecosystem of certified cameras, we’re opening the door for more directors, DPs, and production partners to deliver unforgettable experiences to audiences around the world.”
Designed for production environments, the GFX Eterna 55 features a cinema-style body with industry-standard connections, an adaptable native lens mount and a visually stepless internal electronic variable ND filter. The camera also incorporates Fujifilm’s F-Log2 C logarithmic colour profile, offering wide flexibility in colour grading and image reproduction. Filmmakers can also access 10 newly developed Film Simulation 3D LUTs and 20 internal film simulation modes inspired by classic film aesthetics.
Yuji Igarashi, General Manager of Fujifilm’s Professional Imaging Group, added: “Receiving this certification is an honor for many reasons, one being that IMAX is a beacon for ambitious filmmakers; we’re so proud that GFX Eterna 55 provides an accessible pathway for filmmakers to craft stories with an epic cinematic perspective. At Fujifilm, we have a deep belief in the importance of the theatrical moviegoing experience, where audiences come together to share thoughts, ideas, and emotions through the experience of visual storytelling. GFX Eterna 55 is made for all types of storytellers, including filmmakers who dream of creating larger than life stories for the silver screen and beyond. Fujifilm is proud to provide filmmakers with a system that allows the ability to create motion pictures that are fit for the cinematic scale of The IMAX Experience.”
