Sony has introduced a new camcorder and studio deck to its XDCAM HD422 optical-disc product range. The PDW-680 camcorder and PDW-HD1200 studio deck borrow many popular features from the XDCAM range and are designed to meet the requirements and budgets of broadcasters. Priced at approximately 40% lower than the high-end HD optical-disc based camcorders and decks within the XDCAM family, these products make HD acquisition more accessible to a wider range of professionals.
The XDCAM format has been very well accepted within our region by various broadcasters. We made the strategic decision to eliminate the progressive recording formats feature to ensure broadcasters continue to take advantage of the format at a more affordable budget. said Awad Mousa, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Professional Solutions MEA.
Both the PDW-680 camcorder and PDW-HD1200 studio deck offer enhanced time-efficient workflow features for broadcast professionals engaged in news gathering, TV recording and documentary production where speed is a priority. They inherit high quality recording up to HD 422 at 50 Mbps from the XDCAM family. Their ability to record in SD format allows for smooth migration between SD and HD formats. Professionals can significantly improve operational efficiency with capabilities such as thumbnail scene search and immediate viewing on the built-in LCD panel. Proxy recording enables data to be transferred from the field to the studio at a faster-than-real-time rate, enabling work to start on proxy editing before the high resolution assets arrive.
The PDW-680 camcorder will be shipping early May and will retail at US$22,000
The PDW-HD1200 studio deck will be shipping end August and will retail at US$12,000
