BURANO Version 2.0 will include additional recording modes, added support for SDI output, proxy recording and more.
Sony Electronics has unveiled details of the BURANO Version 2.0 firmware update, set for release in March 2025. This update introduces a host of new features and performance enhancements inspired by user feedback, making the BURANO camera even more versatile for filmmakers.
Among the key updates are new recording formats, including a 3.8K Full Frame crop mode capable of up to 120 fps and a 1.9K mode supporting up to 240 fps, providing filmmakers with flexible high-speed recording options tailored to various applications. The update also introduces a 1.8x de-squeeze setting for anamorphic lenses, expanded high frame rate (S&Q) modes and proxy recording for 24.00 fps formats.
BURANO Version 2.0 improves monitoring and metadata capabilities with standardised SDI video output for X-OCN and XAVC, breathing compensation, image stabilisation metadata in X-OCN and added time code and clip name metadata to SDI output. Users will also benefit from an enhanced on-screen display, offering clearer camera status information outside the image frame and support for View Finder Gamma Display Assist in S-Log3 monitoring.
The update introduces a new PL Mount Voltage menu (10V to 24V), compatibility with Focus/Iris/Zoom control for PL Mount lenses using the optional GP-VR100 handgrip, and enhanced image output when using preset S-Log3 looks or 3D User LUTs. It also improves Auto Focus performance for frame rates of 23.98, 24, 25 and 29.97.
Additional upgrades include exposure tools (High/Low Key) from the VENICE camera system, expanded white balance presets (from 3 to 8) and support for Active/High Image Stabilisation in Full-Frame crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K modes. Ease-of-use enhancements, such as media formatting from the status screen and standard CAM ID and Reel Number settings, aim to streamline workflows for documentary and reality TV productions.
The firmware also boosts live event and multicam functionality, including variable ND control from RCPs, improved camera control through the Camera Remote SDK and tally control for LAN-connected devices.
Finally, BURANO Version 2.0 changes the default frequency setting from 59.94 to 23.98p and adds a “reset to factory defaults” option. Filmmakers can download the firmware update directly to their cameras via Mac or PC upon its release in March 2025.
