Bahrain-based Al Wefaq National Islamic Society has submitted an applicaton to launch a daily Arabic newspaper and a satellite TV station in the Kingdom, according to official sources.
Former Al Wefaq MP Jawad Fairooz stated that opposition groups must be permitted to “air their views” and a newspaper and TV station would enable the group to give voice to their opinion.
Fairooz added that if it was granted a licence to run a newspaper and a TV station, the group had sufficient funding to run the same.
“We will manage from our resources. However, in the future, we are open to potential investors and advertising revenues to improve our services”.
Bahrain’s Information Affairs Authority (IAA) recently maintained that it was looking to open up the media and relax its censorship laws. However, execution of those plans are yet to be seen.
