Connected TV penetration will increase by more than 50% in Western Europe and North America by 2017, according to ABI Research. The report added that Blu-ray adoption will also similarly increase from 25% in Western Europe and North America in 2011 to more than 76% by 2017. By comparison, game console penetration will be significantly lower at 61% in North America and 46% in Western Europe, with even lower rates in other regions.
ABI senior analyst Michael Inouye said most CE manufacturers use a common platform for Connected TVs and Blu-ray players.
Microsoft and Nintendo play only in the game console market, while Smart STB leaders Apple and Roku dont compete in the other connected categories. Sony is unique in its participation in game consoles (PS3), connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and Smart STBs. In the TV and Blu-ray space, Samsung and LG have been the most proactive at bringing connected features for example, introducing new user interfaces that parallel the features first made popular by the game consoles.
Connected TV will also see huge growth thanks to input from Chinese OEM manufacturers such as Skyworth and TCL.
