Abu Dhabi Al Emarat viewers will have the chance to retrace the journey of adventurer Wilfred Thesiger across the UAE desert, as the channel screens its Footsteps of Thesiger documentary for the first time on April 1, 2012, at 10:00 pm UAE time.
Known as Mubarak bin London to the Bedouin tribes of the Arabian Desert, British explorer Wilfred Thesiger crossed the Empty Quarter twice between 1945 and 1950 with the aid of his two Bedouin partners. Produced by Abu Dhabi Al Emarat in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), the Footsteps of Thesiger documentary follows present day adventurers Saeed Rashed Al Mesafry, and Ghafan Mohammed Al Jabry, both from the Emirati Force Military, along with British traveller and Guinness World Record holder, Adrian Hayes, as they retrace Thesigers journey across the Empty Quarter.
Travelling on foot and using camels with little luggage and supplies, the trio follow the route taken by Thesiger and his men, crossing a distance of 1500 kms between Salalah in Oman to Abu Dhabi, passing through the oasis of Liwa and Al Ain. Eissa Al Mail, head of Abu Dhabi Al Emarat, commented: Our channel is proud to produce and showcase Footsteps of Thesiger, the first documentary where viewers can learn about this important part of UAE history, as well as the heritage and precious treasures of this unique stretch of desert.
The aim of producing the film was to show the beauty of this region and its desert, and also to document the values and concepts of Bedouin life, which include bravery and overcoming challenges despite difficult circumstances. Footsteps of Thesiger was produced to the highest quality and promises viewers two hours of suspense, fun and interest Al Mail added.
Commenting on his role, Adrian Hayes, traveller and Guinness World Record holder, commented: Im delighted that we now have a fine documentary that shows some of our incredible journey as well as showing the immense beauty of the desert and the living Bedouin culture and heritage. It was an intensely rewarding and unique experience being part of it.
