Dublin Arabic Film Festival (DAFF) makes its debut this year and will run from May 8 to 11. It is the first event of its kind in Ireland, screening feature films and hosting exclusive talks with special guests at the Light House Cinema in Smithfield.
Acting legend Omar Sharif has been confirmed as guest of honour at the inaugural festival along with special guests include Hany Abu-Assad, the Palestinian director of the Oscar-nominated films Paradise Now and Omar; Nabil Ayouch, Ahmad Abdalla and Dr Jim Swire.
With three Arabic films nominated at the recent Academy Awards, the Arab film industry is rising in importance globally. DAFF will showcase some of the best feature films on offer and provide a departure from the stereotypical images of the region and its people that frequently appear in the Western media.
The festival will appeal to both fans of Arabic films and cinema-goers previously unfamiliar with them, with a stellar line-up of new and older films. The intention is for DAFF to expand into a major cultural event in future years, celebrating not just Arabic films, but also music, dance, art, food and much more. So, lets sit back and enjoy the first of many DAFFs to come!
