News channels Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya may have to face competition from a new Saudi news channel which is in the pipeline.
Prince Alwaleed bin Talals Kingdom group has announced the launch of a Saudi 24-hour news channel. The new channel will be headed by journalist Jamal Khashoggi and will air from 12, December next year.
At a press conference the prince announced that the new channel will focus on development in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.
The new channel would be independent of the prince’s Rotana regional media and entertainment group, which earlier this year sold a nine percent stake to global media giant News Corp, owner of the Fox News channel.
The prince also announced that an agreement has been signed with Bloomberg LP to produce business news content for the channel.
Speaking about the planned content on the channel, the prince commented: “The Arab world is interested in the fields of business, employment, economic development, and is focused on prosperity and growth.”
