End users will soon be able to use the YouTube app to live stream events from their mobile phones, according to a global announcement made by the Google-owned web site during a keynote address at the VidCon show in California. Although a firm launch date has not been announced, Kurt Wilms, who leads the companys immersive experiences products, has promised that when it does become available to the public, the YouTube mobile live streaming will be baked right into the core YouTube mobile app”.
So far, it has been tested by some of YouTube’s partners including online news channel The Young Turks and Mexican comedy troupe Platica Polinesia at VidCon, which is where the celebrities of YouTube, Facebook, Periscope and Vine often meet their fans. Twitters Periscope and Facebook Live are, at present, the most popular live-streaming platforms.
YouTube has had a live-streaming product since 2011 but it was only available on desktops and laptops equipped with web cams. The new announcement will enable Android and iOS users to host a live stream using YouTube. When a user goes to the YouTube app to record a video, a new button will give them the option to record a live broadcast. On clicking to go live, the user will be prompted to enter a video title and provide a photo that will serve as the videos thumbnail. YouTube will also make the live broadcast available immediately after the live recording finishes for those who missed watching the event live.
