The pop-up will further build on the cinema’s mission to inspire and engage communities across the region.
Cinema Akil, is making its debut in Bahrain with a special pop-up at the Muharraq Nights Festival, organised by the Bahrain Ministry of Culture.
The independent arthouse cinema will present a programme of award-winning films from December 19 to 23, 2024. The pop-up, set against the stunning backdrop of the Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will screen compelling narratives such as the Jordanian drama Inshallah A Boy, Wim Wenders’ poetic Japanese film Perfect Days, and Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpiece The Boy and the Heron. Cinephiles can also experience Mandoob, a powerful Saudi tale set in Riyadh, and Bye Bye Tiberias, Lina Soualem’s poignant documentary tracing themes of family and identity.
Speaking about the pop-up at Muharraq Nights, Butheina Kazim, Founder of Cinema Akil, said: “Cinema Akil’s participation in Muharraq Nights is a celebration of the enduring power of storytelling to bridge cultures and connect communities. Bringing our first-ever pop-up to Bahrain, set against the historic backdrop of the Pearling Path, is an extraordinary opportunity to share the magic of independent cinema with a new audience. We are honoured to collaborate with the Ministry of Culture in Bahrain to create a unique cinematic experience that complements the festival’s rich celebration of heritage and creativity.”
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Cinema Akil, bringing its passion for independent
storytelling and its signature arthouse charm to new audiences. In recent years, UAE-based Cinema Akil has expanded its presence across the GCC and the region through pop-ups in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Amman and now Bahrain.
