Fox International Channels (FIC) has refuted claims that the global multimedia business is preparing to launch a 3D channel any time soon.
It was rumoured that the global TV network, which airs 14 channels in the region, including National Geographic and FoxMovies, was mulling the launch of a 3D channel this year.
Speaking to Broadcast Pro Middle East, FIC general manager Rohit DSilva did confirm that the network is looking to partner with satellite and IPTV operators in the Middle East to create blocks of time to air programmes in 3D, but could not say if talks were underway or when Fox planned to launch the project.
DSilva added that much of the networks footage is 3D ready, including footage for its popular National Geographic Arabia channel and some sports events.
Programmes that we have the rights to, we have developed some footage in 3D and we are looking to partner with satellite operators and IPTV operators to create blocks of time where we could air programmes in this format, but we have no immediate plans to launch a dedicated channel, confirmed DSilva.
He added that FIC is waiting for the 3D platform to expand before it endeavours to launch its 3D channel in the Middle East.
Broadcasters, electrical product suppliers and operators need to work together to develop the delivery of 3D content to consumers. FIC will ready itself in the same way it did with HD delivery.
FIC was one of the first channel groups to go HD in the region in March 2009 after an extended period of preparation.
