The inflight broadband service will enter commercial service with Saudi Arabias national carrier Saudia from next year.
Inmarsat and Stellar Blu have completed the development of terminals for GX Aviation inflight broadband which is now ready for deployment, following the conclusion of a flight trial campaign, where its performance was tested across more than 320 simultaneous online user sessions and sustained throughput of over 200Mbps.
The lightweight, low-drag Falcon 300 terminal, developed with Stellar Blu (previously GDC Technics), has received full-type approval for use over Inmarsats Global Xpress (GX) satellite network. It will enter commercial service with Saudi Arabias national carrier Saudia from early 2023, under an agreement for GX Aviation to be installed and activated on 35 Airbus A321neo and Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
The terminal has been designed to meet the increasing connectivity needs of airline passengers around the world, allowing them to stream high-definition videos, download documents, browse the internet, shop online, and more.
The high-performance terminal is compatible fully with all existing and upcoming satellites from Inmarsats GX network. Key features include Stellar Blus modem manager (MODMAN), with exclusive components by Kontron and next-generation modem by iDirect, together with a flat panel antenna by ThinKom. To boost efficiencies and reduce costs, Inmarsats Advanced Integrated Services Manager (AISM) will be natively hosted on the MODMAN, enabling passenger sessions and traffic to be managed without the need for separate hardware.
By combining high reliability and low drag performance, the total cost of ownership is lowered and the impact on fuel burn is minimal, helping decrease CO2 emissions and fuel costs at a critical time for airlines and the planet.
