Director Mai Masri has garnered more than 60 awards across film festivals globally.
Netflix has released the Palestinian film 3000 Nights, directed by Mai Masri, bringing the compelling narrative to a global audience. Originally screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, the movie has now found its way to Netflix.
3000 Nights was Jordan’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 89th Academy Awards, although it did not secure a nomination.
Filmed within the confines of a real prison, with a predominantly female cast, many of whom had personal connections to the prison system, either through their own experiences or those of family members, the film delves into the story of Layal, a Palestinian woman facing unjust imprisonment.
Layal, a young schoolteacher living in the occupied West Bank town of Nablus, Palestine, with her husband Farid, sees their plans for a new life in Canada disrupted when she is arrested and falsely accused of aiding a teenage boy involved in an attack on a military checkpoint. Refusing to testify against the boy, Layal is charged as an accomplice and sentenced to eight years in prison, despite the efforts of her human rights defence lawyer.
The film captures Layal’s enduring spirit as she battles for herself, her child, and the dream of their eventual reunion. 3000 Nights on Netflix promises to resonate with audiences worldwide, shedding light on the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
