These next-generation platforms are essential for supporting new services, including the adoption of advanced video codecs like VVC and the handling of visually lossless formats such as JPEG-XS.
Harmonic has announced that it will showcase the latest generation of its XOS Advanced Media Processor and Spectrum X Media Server at IBC 2024, offering significant advancements in production, playout, video streaming and broadcast delivery workflows. The new XOS media processor boosts channel encoding and transcoding capacity by 50% compared to its predecessor, while the Spectrum X media server doubles channel density for most workflows, delivering breakthroughs in both energy efficiency and cost savings.
Stéphane Cloirec, Vice President, of Video Appliances and Software Product Management at Harmonic, said: “Efficiency is paramount in today’s cost-conscious video streaming and broadcast market. Our customers are striving for significant improvements, and our software solutions are designed to help them meet their cost-efficiency goals. By offering a substantial reduction in total cost of ownership, including lower costs per channel, reduced CapEx investment and minimized power consumption, we enable broadcasters and video service providers to achieve greater operational efficiency with less equipment, cables, rack space and cooling requirements.”
The next-gen XOS media processor not only increases performance but also reduces power consumption by 33% per channel, using just 8 watts per HD channel. A standout feature is its new encoder stress performance gauge, which tracks CPU resource usage and video quality in real time, allowing broadcasters and video service providers to optimize channel encoding while maintaining superior video quality.
Powered by AI-driven video compression and quality optimisation, the XOS processor ensures the reliable delivery of high-quality video at minimal bitrates, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
The Spectrum X media server improves production and playout workflows by integrating file, baseband and transport stream ingest with channel playout in one system. Housed in a compact 1RU COTS server, the Spectrum X is suitable for space-limited environments and provides robust reliability for mission-critical broadcast operations. It also supports advanced video codecs like VVC and visually lossless formats such as JPEG-XS.
Harmonic will showcase these new platforms at IBC 2024 from September 13-16 in Amsterdam, highlighting their potential to transform video services and future-proof infrastructure.
