The CCPT subsequently restrained MultiChoice from raising prices on April 29. However, the company challenged the court’s jurisdiction and proceeded with the increase.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) has imposed a N150 million fine on Multichoice Nigeria for challenging the court’s jurisdiction.
In its ruling, the tribunal also ordered Multichoice to provide one month of free subscriptions on DStv and GOtv for Nigerian customers.
Last month, Multichoice Nigeria announced a 25% increase in subscription costs for its DStv and GOtv packages. However, the tribunal intervened, preventing Multichoice from implementing the tariff hike scheduled for May 1, deeming the eight-day warning period insufficient.
In response, Multichoice Nigeria contested the tribunal’s decision, filing an application to challenge the jurisdiction of the tribunal regarding the price restraining order.
