Late last week, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, announced the launch of the Dubai Film and TV Commission. WAM reports seem to suggest that the head of Dubai Studio City will helm the Commission. However, the Media Office was unable to confirm if the report referred to Jamal Al Sharif, managing director of Dubai Studio City and Dubai Media City.
This development comes hot on the heels of Abu Dhabis own announcements at Cannes last week promising a 30% cash rebate to producers looking to shoot in the UAE capital.
Dubai TV and Film Commission has been in the offing for a while and is said to be part of the emirates 2015 vision to attract international film and TV productions to the emirate and, thereby, improve tourism. The Commissions mandate will be to promote Dubai as a premier location for shooting, develop concrete incentives for filmmakers looking to film here and also streamline all processes to enable a comfortable experience for filmmakers looking to shoot here.
Other members of the Commission will include representatives from the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, the Department of Economic Development, Dubai Police, Dubai International Film Festival, Dubai Media Office, Emirates airline and the Jumeirah Group.
The commission will also set about attracting appropriate staff and develop competencies in science, technology and innovation.
