Actress and filmmaker Ericka Nicole Malone’s Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story will premiere on opening night at the 30th annual Pan African Film Festival on April 19.
Following its opening night gala, the PAFF will screen its remaining features at the Cinemark Baldwin Hills.
Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story is directed by Denise Dowe and written and executive produced by Ericka Nicole Malone.
Named after one of Jackson’s signature songs, Remember Me, the film, set during the tumultuous period between 1956 and 1963, will chronicle the successful career of Jackson as well as her unique friendship and devotion to Martin Luther King Jr. and her unsung contribution to the Civil Rights Movement. Also referred to as the Queen of Gospel, Jackson was pivotal in the encouragement and inspiration of MLK’s famous I Have A Dream speech. She often accompanied King to perform at rallies and events and became the silent voice behind the great activist and civic leader.
The film’s cast includes Ledisi, Columbus Short, Janet Hubert, Vanessa A. Williams, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Keith David, Corbin Bleu, and Keith Robinson.
Malone is well known for building complex, relatable characters, whether she is writing a play for the stage or a script for a television series.
Her upcoming productions are a testament to her kaleidoscope of talent for telling human stories and connecting with audiences on multiple levels, which includes Della, Dreams From the Edge, and JG and the BC Kids.
The festival will run from April 19 to May 1, 2022. This year PAFF features over 200 films from 55 countries in 18 languages.
