Users will have the option to include additional account members for an additional fee on top of their subscription plan.
Starting today, residents of the UAE will encounter limitations on sharing Netflix passwords beyond their households, as the streaming service enacts measures to crack down on password sharing, according to Khaleej Times.
A customer service representative from Netflix confirmed the enforcement of this restriction. “Now, only members living in the same house can share passwords and use the same account. It cannot be used in a house across the street, for example,” the representative clarified.
Netflix’s clampdown was first speculated and announced in January of 2023, and the Netflix password-sharing removal was implemented in more than 100 countries.
When asked about the mechanism behind detecting and restricting password-sharing, the representative revealed that Netflix is noting the WiFi network and IP addresses of devices used on the platform.
Netflix has also announced that it will no longer allow password sharing in India starting the same day as the UAE.
Customers in India who are found to be sharing their accounts with people outside their household in India are receiving emails from Netflix as a result of this policy to ensure compliance.
Moreover, Netflix now allows paying customers to add an extra member from outside their household, though it comes with an additional monthly expense. Members can easily transfer a person’s profile while retaining viewing history and personalised recommendations, as mentioned on the Mashable website.
Netflix’s subscriber numbers increased to 5.9m in its Q2, fuelled by a crackdown on password sharing in more than 100 countries in May.
