The application submission deadline is November 9, 2024.
The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has opened applications for its Short Script Lab, an online programme designed to support emerging screenwriters and writer-directors from Qatar and the MENA region. The lab aims to guide participants through the process of completing a new draft of their original short film screenplay, with mentorship from experienced international professionals.
Participants in the lab may also have the chance for their screenplays to be considered for production under DFI programmes such as Qumra Shorts, the Qatari Film Fund and Production Funding (for the MENA region).
The Short Script Lab offers a dynamic mix of one-on-one mentorship sessions, group discussions, and independent work. Writers will refine their scriptwriting skills, develop their short film screenplays, and gain insight into both regional and global short film trends through case studies of successful films. Additionally, participants will be introduced to the essentials of film packaging, including how to create a synopsis, intent note, and mood board, as well as explore short film production opportunities.
The lab involves eight days of group work and five days of independent scriptwriting, with participants required to present a revised version of their script by the final day. A month after the lab, participants will submit another draft for a final feedback session with mentors.
Applications are open until November 6, 2024, and should be submitted to scriptlab@dohafilminstitute.com.
The follow-up meeting will take place in mid-January 2025, and online sessions are scheduled for 3:00 – 7:30 PM (AST), with flexibility for selected participants. Full participation in all sessions is mandatory.
The workshop is aimed at writers and directors of short films, with a total of eight projects to be selected. Applicants must have prior experience writing and directing at least one short film. The programme prioritizes applicants from Qatar, the MENA region, the diaspora and DFI grantees, though emerging filmmakers from other regions are also encouraged to apply.
Application requirements include a project title, synopsis, script or detailed treatment, director’s statement, biography, filmography and contact information. Candidates may be invited for an interview as part of the selection process, with evaluation based on their ability to further develop their materials and collaborate effectively within the lab.
